How to Change a Shopify Store Name (Step by Step)

Renaming your Shopify store takes about a minute, but the name and the domain are two different things. Here is the exact path, plus what to fix after the change.

Your Shopify store name is the display name customers see in your browser tab, on order emails, and on invoices. Changing it is one of the easiest edits in the admin: it takes about a minute, and you can do it as often as you like.

The catch is that the store name and the store domain are two different things. Renaming the store does not rename your .myshopify.com address, and it does not change your custom domain either. This guide covers the exact steps, what the change does and does not touch, and how to rename the domain too if that is what you actually need.

The short answer

Go to Settings, then Store details. In the Basic information section, click Edit, replace the Store name, and click Save. The new name takes effect immediately across your admin, your customer emails, and anywhere your theme shows the store name.

If all you want is a new display name, that is the whole job. If you also want the web address to match, keep reading: the domain is a separate setting with its own rules, including a one-time limit on the free myshopify.com address.

Change your store name on desktop

Log in to your Shopify admin on a computer. Click Settings at the bottom left of the screen, then select Store details from the settings menu.

In the Basic information section at the top, click Edit next to your current store name. A small window opens with the Store name field. Delete the old name, type the new one, and click Save.

Open your storefront in a private browser window to confirm the new name shows up where you expect it. Some themes display the store name in the header, others show only a logo, so the visible change depends on your theme.

Change your store name on the Shopify app

You can make the same change from your phone. Open the Shopify app and tap the Store icon at the bottom right, then go to Settings and select General.

Find the Store name field, replace the current name with the new one, and tap Save at the top. The change syncs to your store right away, just like the desktop version.

What the name change does not change

Changing your store name changes the display name only. Your .myshopify.com address stays exactly the same, your custom domain stays the same, and none of your page URLs change. That is good news for SEO: since no URL changes, there are no redirects to set up and no rankings to lose from the rename itself.

It also does not change your legal business name, your billing details, or your store login. And it does not automatically update anything outside Shopify: your logo, your social media profiles, your email signature, and your packaging still carry the old name until you change them yourself.

One place worth checking is your homepage title tag. Many themes use the store name in the browser tab title, and the title you set under Online Store, then Preferences, may still contain the old name. Update it so search results show the new name too.

How to change your myshopify.com domain

If the address itself is the problem, for example your store still shows an old name in yourstore.myshopify.com, the fix is separate. Go to Settings, then Domains, and look for the option to change to a new myshopify.com domain.

Enter the new subdomain you want and confirm it. Shopify checks availability, then switches the address. Your old myshopify.com address redirects to the new one automatically, so old links keep working.

Two warnings before you use it. First, you can only change the myshopify.com address once per store, so pick carefully and save it for a real rebrand, not a spelling fix you could live with. After that one change is used, the only way to get a different myshopify.com address is to open a new store. Second, keep a note of your original myshopify.com address: Shopify still uses it for logging in and for support requests.

For most stores the better move is a custom domain. Buy one or connect one you already own, then set it as your primary domain under Settings, then Domains. Customers then see yourbrand.com instead of any myshopify.com address, and you can change custom domains whenever you like. A store build or rebrand is also a good moment to review the Shopify store development page if the theme needs work at the same time.

What to update after a rename

A rename is quick, but a rebrand is not finished until the new name shows up everywhere a customer might see the old one. Work through this short checklist after you save the new name.

First, the store itself: your logo or header text if it spells out the old name, the title and meta description under Online Store, then Preferences, and any text on your homepage, about page, or footer that mentions the old name.

Second, your customer emails: order confirmations, shipping updates, and abandoned checkout emails all use the store name, so send yourself a test order and read them. Third, everywhere else: your Instagram and Facebook pages, your Google Business Profile if you have one, your email signature, and any printed packaging or inserts.

If the rename is part of a bigger rebrand and the store needs design work too, a Shopify SEO audit from $200 will show whether the old name is still baked into titles, schema, or internal links anywhere, so nothing slips through.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my Shopify store name more than once?

Yes. There is no limit on store name changes: you can rename the store as often as you like, and each change takes effect as soon as you save it. The one-time limit applies only to the myshopify.com domain, not to the display name.

Will changing my store name hurt my SEO?

Not directly. The store name change does not alter any URL, so there are no redirects to set up and no pages to reindex. The only SEO job is to update the places where the old name appears as text: your homepage title tag, your meta description, and any on-page copy that mentions the old name.

Can I change my myshopify.com URL?

Only once per store, through Settings, then Domains. After that one change is used, a different myshopify.com address means opening a new store. The old address redirects to the new one, so existing links keep working.

Does changing the store name change my domain?

No. The store name and the domain are separate settings. To change the address customers use, buy or connect a custom domain and set it as your primary domain under Settings, then Domains.

Do I need to tell my customers about the new name?

If it is a small correction, no. If it is a real rebrand, yes: a short email or social post helps returning customers recognize the new name and avoids confusion when order emails arrive under a name they do not know yet.
